Stemming from a chronic trauma response and a relentless pursuit of flawlessness, perfectionism can affect various aspects of life, hindering mental health and well-being. In this blog post, we will delve into the nature of perfectionism, its underlying causes, and provide valuable insights on how to overcome its grip. 

 

What is Perfectionism?  

Perfectionism is the belief that everything must be flawless to ensure safety and acceptance. It entails setting unattainably high standards and harshly judging yourself for falling short. Perfectionism can become a form of self-sabotage, leading to procrastination, avoidance, and a lack of motivation. It may also be driven by a desire for external validation, hoping that flawless performance will bring recognition and worth. It is crucial to differentiate perfectionism from excellence, understanding that embracing imperfection is an essential part of growth. 

 

Why Do We Develop Perfectionism?  

Perfectionism can stem from various factors, including high expectations from authority figures, an upbringing with emotionally unstable caregivers, fear of failure, low self-esteem, and certain personality traits like conscientiousness. These influences shape the development of perfectionism, highlighting the complex nature of its origins.   • A fitness enthusiast pushes themselves to extremes, resulting in anxiety and potential harm to their well-being. 
  • A parent constantly compares themselves to others, putting excessive pressure on their child and straining their relationship. 

These examples demonstrate the negative consequences perfectionism can have in different areas of life. 

 

Are You a Perfectionist? 

Identifying signs of perfectionism is crucial for self-awareness.   • Cultivate tolerance for uncertainty around things you CAN’T control and create a greater sense of certainty around things you CAN control. 
  • Trust the process. 
  • Practice self-compassion and challenge negative self-talk. 
  • Challenge perfectionist thinking patterns and embrace flexibility. 
  • Seek support from therapists or coaches specializing in perfectionism. 

 

Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword, driving achievement while compromising mental health and well-being. Understanding its origins and detrimental effects is crucial for personal growth. By implementing strategies to overcome perfectionism, such as setting realistic goals, cultivating self-compassion, and seeking support, individuals can break free from its grasp and embrace a more balanced approach to life.
